Essential to the creation of the Toronto City Hall’s 155-foot diameter clear-span Council Chamber Dome, Master Builders brand Pozzolith® was the ideal cold-weather admixture used to control slump and setting times as well as air content and strength. The dome is the crowning element of this jewel of international architecture.

1960s

Completed in 1965, the Toronto City Hall stands as a monument to art and concrete innovation and a true demonstration of “the art of concrete.”

This bold structure used 80,000 cubic yards of cast-in place concrete and 11,000 pre-cast elements. Most of the pre-cast concrete was created with the textures and etched elements, which helped give the building its distinctive, futuristic look.

Called “the most important new building in North America” at the time of its construction, the structures – two curved towers – surround a saucer-like, domed council chamber. Master Builders brand Pozzolith® admixture was vital to the construction and aesthetic appeal of the structure.

This artistic vision, along with many other landmark buildings and bridges built in the 1960s, were made possible by Master Builders brand products and new options in construction technology.
