In order to command higher rental rates, New York’s Trump Tower is often marketed as having 68 floors so as to appear taller than it really is. In reality, there are 58 constructed floors.

Welcome to the BASF celebration of
100 Years of the Master Builders brand

1980s

In 1983, Master Builders hit the storied streets of New York City with Trump Tower – a 664-ft., 58-story shear-wall/core structure. The exterior of the building is tied to a concrete core to make the building particularly resistant to lateral forces like wind and minor earthquakes. Master Builders Rheobuild® admixture was essential to increasing workability, while maintaining strength and easing placement of 8,000 psi concrete in the heavily reinforced columns. At the time of its completion, Trump Tower was the tallest concrete framed structure in the city.

Equally important as the development of tall skyscrapers, the idea of conservation was beginning to take shape. In the 1980s, Master Builders products paved the way for concrete to play a role with innovations like Rheobuild and the newly patented DELVO® Stabilizer. One of DELVO’s benefits is that hydration with concrete could temporarily be stopped, reducing waste associated with returned concrete and concrete washwater. By promoting materials conservation, DELVO was a sustainable product, introduced at a time before sustainability was the watchword.

These revolutionary products addressed the construction concerns of the day, but also looked ahead to the environmental and sustainability issues of the future.
