Committed to Industry Growth and Technology Leadership

Our commitment is to provide solutions to our customers. We believe that in order for the concrete industry to thrive, industry leaders, concrete producers, material suppliers, equipment manufacturers and industry associations must work together to promote concrete as the preferred building material. That is why BASF supports many of the technical and trade organizations that serve and represent the construction industry. We provide financial support and employee participation on technical committees responsible for the development of standard tests and practices, technical guides, codes and specification procedures, as well as industry and technology reports. Our employees are actively involved in leading initiatives with several of these organizations, and also serve on promotion committees and expert panels that oversee these initiatives.

Industry Initiatives:

Through hard work, diligence and financial support, these and other programs have laid the groundwork for a more profitable, forward thinking concrete construction industry. BASF is proud to have played a role in the following industry initiatives.

-- Ready Mix 2000: An industry initiative launched by the NRMCA in the early 1990s to lead and foster industry change and growth, the Admixture Systems business of BASF was a charter member, facilitator and major financial contributor to the program from concept through industry acceptance. The success of this industry program has generated new enthusiasm in the industry and has led to the implementation of specific and measurable educational, promotional and growth programs designed to improve the health and profitability of the industry.

-- PC-21: The same successful concepts implemented in RMC 2000 were transferred to the precast/prestressed concrete industry in a program adopted by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) in 1994. The Admixture Systems business of BASF worked closely with PCI to develop and launch the PC-21 initiative. Producers, suppliers and association executives developed and implemented a strategic blueprint and accompanying programs.

-- Strategic Development Council: The Strategic Development Council was formed under the auspices of the American Concrete Institute to encourage collaboration and cooperation between materials suppliers, contractors, engineers, government agencies, owners, academia and producers with the goal of accelerating the development and acceptance of new concrete technology. BASF plays a lead role in the continuing development and management of this group.

-- Life-365 Service Life Prediction Model: One of the first projects for the SDC was the challenge to facilitate the design of durable, long-lasting concrete structures. An industry consortium worked collaboratively to develop LIFE-365, a software program that can be used to calculate the service life and life cycle costs of structures when exposed to chloride ions in service. BASF provided overall guidance, and supplied technical details and references, determined equations, and verified data used in development of this valuable tool.

-- RMC (Ready Mix Concrete) Foundation: BASF was an early supporter and major contributor to this charitable foundation established by NRMCA to provide a permanent income stream to fund future research, education and promotional programs aimed at improving the health and profitability of the ready-mixed concrete industry. The Foundation provides financial stability to the industry through continuous investment in research and education.

-- Center for Advanced Cement Based Materials (ACBM): Founded in 1989 by the National Science Foundation, this is a research consortium of Northwestern University, University of Illinois, Purdue University, University of Michigan and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Outstanding scientists and engineers from these institutions work collaboratively on research initiatives to advance technology and innovation related to cement and concrete. The center is completely industry funded, and for many years BASF provided financial support for research to address the critical need to improve concrete infrastructure and to mitigate negative environmental effects on concrete structures.

-- Concrete Industry Management Program (CIM): The Admixture Systems business of BASF is an active participant in the development of the Concrete Industry Management degree program. This first-of-its-kind four-year college program is aimed at preparing graduates with a full complement of specific skills required to move successfully into management positions in the concrete industry. BASF sponsors scholarships for incoming students to the program, and company employees in sales, technical service, research and development are invited to be guest lecturers on concrete and related topics. BASF has also played an integral role in the expansion efforts of the Concrete Industry Management program to select universities across the nation.

-- National Concrete Canoe Competition: Since 1988, the industry has challenged young civil engineering students to explore the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material through this annual competition held in conjunction with the American Society of Civil Engineers. Each year, upwards of 2,500 student members representing nearly 200 student chapters of ASCE work to design, build and race canoes constructed of concrete. This fun, yet challenging, exercise showcases innovative uses of concrete. It also encourages future civil engineers to think beyond normal bounds and gives students hands-on experience with concrete and project management. Winning teams receive national publicity, the respect of their peers, and generous scholarships from BASF and other national sponsors.

-- Prescription to Performance (P2P) Initiative: The NRMCA established the P2P program to evaluate and implement a strategy for transforming concrete specifications from prescriptive to performance based.   Performance based specifications encourage innovation, cost-effective construction, and quality control.  BASF plays a lead role in the continuing development and management of this initiative.
