Concrete Canoe Competition 

Encouraging Design Ingenuity and Supporting Engineering Education  

Each year, students from premier civil engineering programs apply the principles they’ve learned in the classroom and develop important team and project management skills they’ll need in their careers to design, build and race a concrete canoe. Nearly 5,000 students involved with more than 200 student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers compete annually to qualify for the National Concrete Canoe Competition.

Since 1988, BASF Construction Chemicals has sponsored the National Concrete Canoe Competition. The company provides technical information, sample admixtures, and information on concrete performance, testing and mix designs in an effort to foster the problem-solving skills of civil engineering students and to promote the versatility of concrete as a construction material.

The quest to design and build a canoe of concrete presents unique challenges, and this project offers students an opportunity to gain hands-on, real world experience with the most versatile building material available.
