BASF Receives Environmental Award for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

U.S. Concrete, Inc. recognizes new plant for use of EF Technology®

CLEVELAND, OH

BASF has recently been recognized by U.S. Concrete, Inc. (NASDAQ: RMIX) for utilizing U.S. Concrete’s newly launched, environmentally friendly concrete mix designs, called EF Technology® in the construction of a new state-of-the-art resins manufacturing facility.  Superior Materials, L.L.C., a U.S. Concrete Company, working closely with admixture supplier BASF’s Admixture Systems business, designed the concrete mixture used in the 200,000 square foot foundation of the newly constructed plant in Wyandotte, Michigan.

“For a concrete mix design to be considered for the EF Technology® Award, it must utilize alternative materials, including recycled industrial by-products, that reduce the carbon footprint of the construction project and divert waste materials from disposal facilities,” stated Wally Johnson, U.S. Concrete’s Vice President - Marketing and Sales. “By utilizing our proprietary EF Technology®, BASF was able to eliminate between 100 and 300 pounds of carbon dioxide per cubic yard of concrete, thus reducing the overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions in this project.”

The concrete mix design utilized for this project consisted of 35 to 45 percent alternative cementitious materials. In addition, BASF’s PolyHeed® FC100 admixture was used to reduce the total water content in the mixture, improve the finishability of the concrete and reduce the time that it took for the concrete to harden. Through the use of EF Technology®, this project prevented nearly two million pounds of CO2 from polluting the atmosphere.

“We are proud to work with our valued customers like U.S. Concrete to help construct innovative and durable buildings, while making our planet a better place to live,” said Gabriel Cottrell, Business Director, Admixture Systems, BASF.
