BASF celebrates 25 years of sustainable construction leadership with DELVO® Stabilizer hydration-controlling admixture technology

CLEVELAND, OH -- The North American Admixture Systems business of BASF’s Construction Chemicals division today announced that this year marks the 25th anniversary of its innovative DELVO® Stabilizer hydration-controlling admixture. DELVO Stabilizer is a first-of-its-kind, patented admixture technology that allows for the recycle of returned plastic concrete and concrete washwater, providing measurable environmental and economic savings for ready-mixed concrete producers.

“To reach this milestone anniversary and still have concrete producers requesting DELVO is a testament to the unique chemistry, exceptional performance, and inherent sustainability of this product,” said Robert Ryan, Product Manager, BASF.  “This extremely versatile admixture technology helps producers achieve uniform and predictable concrete, addressing the challenges of many of today’s high-performance concrete projects.”

Recently, DELVO Stabilizer has been used in the concrete mixtures for monumental structures like One World Trade Center in New York, New York.

BASF is committed to helping customers quantify the benefits of this unique technology and recently introduced the DELVO HCA Value Calculator. Using this tool, BASF representatives can create economic and sustainability reports for concrete producers. The tool calculates the environmental impact savings using BASF’s ground-breaking Eco-Efficiency Analysis methodology for concrete.
“DELVO is an integral component of our product portfolio for sustainable concrete construction,” said Gabriel Cottrell, Business Manager, Admixture Systems, BASF. “It has stood the test of time because it helps our customers measurably improve their performance, environmental position, and most importantly their bottom line.”

DELVO Stabilizer admixture was developed in 1986 to address two ready-mixed concrete producer challenges: the disposal of returned plastic concrete and the disposal of concrete washwater from truck drums. It continues to be used in several applications, including same day stabilization of returned plastic concrete, overnight/weekend stabilization of concrete wash water from truck drums, long-haul stabilization of freshly batched concrete, extended set time control of conventional concrete, and preserving fresh concrete during job delays/truck breakdowns. In addition, it is used frequently for set time control of both pervious concrete and 4x4™ Concrete mixtures.

DELVO Stabilizer hydration-controlling admixture technology works by forming a protective barrier around cementitious materials, preventing portland cement, fly ash and granulated slag from achieving initial set until its effect wears off.  It provides flexibility in the scheduling of placing and finishing operations and cost savings due to reduction of concrete and wash water waste.

In addition to DELVO, BASF offers a wide range of products, technologies, and tools for sustainable construction, including the innovative BASF Integrated Durability-Sustainability Wizard.  These tools help concrete producers, contractors, architects and engineers identify solutions that minimize economical and ecological impact.
