Eco-Efficiency Analysis 

The innovative Eco-Efficiency Analysis (EEA) program from BASF examines the environmental life cycle of Green Sense Concrete mixtures, beginning with the extraction of raw materials through the production of concrete.  This analysis quantifies the economic and ecological benefits of Green Sense Concrete mixtures.

Developed and used by BASF Corporation in its own product development process since 1996, EEA methodology is conducted in accordance with the environmental protocol found in the ISO 14040 and 14044 standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It has also been third-party validated by NSF International and TÜV Rheinland.

Environmental Categories

BASF examines six key environmental impact categories when using the Eco-Efficiency Analysis methodology.  Eco-Efficiency Analysis focuses on the effects of concrete ingredients and mix proportions on environmental impact categories including, energy consumption, emissions (air, water, and solid waste), toxicity potential, risk potential, consumption of raw materials, and land use. This thorough and comprehensive approach to evaluating the environmental impact of concrete mixes is the first of its kind in the industry.

Ecological Fingerprint

BASF analyzes a wealth of detailed information compiled from our in-house records, industry associations and government databases. One output from the analysis is an "ecological fingerprint," that provides a relative environmental comparison of the various alternatives being evaluated compared to a reference for each of the six impact categories. The environmental impact is reduced the closer the ecological fingerprint is to the center zero. As this graph shows, the Green Sense Concrete mix has the lowest environmental impact.

Eco-Efficiency Profile

Social and statistical weighting factors are used to develop a single value to describe the ecological impact for each concrete mixture. Each of these values is plotted against the cost for the alternative derived from the economic component of the Eco-Efficiency Analysis. The most economical and ecological concrete mixes move directionally toward the upper right quadrant in the Eco-Efficiency Analysis profile.  Green Sense Concrete is shown as the most preferable level of Eco-Efficiency.

Final Report

The final product is a comprehensive, customized report that quantifies the environmental impact with practical equivalents for each concrete mix for all of the six environmental impact categories.  The report can be used internall or externally to position your company as a leader in sustainable construction through the use of Green Sense Concrete.

Eco-Efficiency Analysis examines six environmental categories to quantify the impact of Green Sense Concrete as compared to other concrete alternatives.  An in-depth analysis is created for each concrete mixture for each impact category.
