RHEOCOLOR® L Liquid-Coloring Admixtures for Cool-Color Concrete
The use of cool-color concrete surfaces can generate energy savings just by being lighter in color. Darker color surfaces absorb the sun’s heat and require additional illumination, while lighter color surfaces reflect it and require less illumination, minimizing energy demands both for cooling and lighting.
Why it’s a sustainable technology
- Lighter color of concrete (with or without liquid-coloring admixtures), relative to asphalt, minimizes the urban heat island effect
- By reducing the heat island effect, air conditioning costs can be lowered by as much as 12%, the intensity of air-pollution lessened, and heat-related problems prevented (Source: www.concreteparking.org)
- Lighter colored, reflective surfaces minimize the lighting requirements to safely illuminate buildings and parking lots
- Decreased energy demands decrease the power plant emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases
- Can be used in place of less sustainable floor coverings such as vinyl composition tiles (VCT) and carpets
LEED Credit Contribution Potential
May contribute to earning LEED credits in the Sustainable Sites category, Credit 7.1, Heat Island Effect, Non-Roof (one possible point).
How it Works
-
Cool-color concrete from BASF is achieved through the use of RHEOCOLOR L liquid coloring admixtures
-
RHEOCOLOR L liquid coloring admixtures are formulated to mix evenly in the concrete, providing performance benefits unavailable with other pigments
-
Cool-color concrete is available in several colors to satisfy the preferences of the end users
