Green Sense Concrete
Approximately one ton of CO2 is generated for every one ton of cement produced and, on a global basis, cement production accounts for approximately 5 - 6% of all CO2 emissions. Proactively, cement companies are addressing this issue through various initiatives that include the use of alternate fuels, limestone addition and, where feasible, recycling of cement kiln dust.
Green SenseSM Concrete is an optimized mixture program in which recycled cementitious and non-cementitious materials are used in combination with specially-formulated BASF admixtures. The result is an environmentally preferable, cost-effective concrete that meets, and often exceeds, performance targets.
Why it’s a sustainable technology
- Uses advanced mix optimization techniques to increase the amount of supplementary cementitious materials (ex. fly ash, slag cement)
- Lowers energy demands, and CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts per unit volume of concrete produced
- Uses inert filler materials that may otherwise end up in landfills
LEED Credit Contribution Potential
- May contribute to earning LEED credits in the category Materials and Resources, Credit 4.1, Recycled Content, 10% (one possible point), and Credit 4.2, Recycled Content, 20% (one additional possible point).
- May also contribute to earning LEED credits in the Materials and Resources category, Credits 5.1 and 5.2 if materials used in the mixture are extracted or produced within 500 miles of the project site. One possible point can be earned for 10% and an additional point for 20%.
- May contribute to earning LEED credits in Innovation and Design category, Credit 1.1, if cement content is reduced by more then 40%.
